Edward M. Varriale, 76, passed into eternal rest on Thursday, January 5, 2023, at St. Peter's Hospice Unit after a long illness, surrounded by his loving family.
Born in Troy, Ed was the son of the late George A. and Matilda Hannigan Varriale.
He was a graduate of Troy High School and served his country in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam Conflict. Upon his discharge from the Navy, Ed worked for the F.A.A. as an inspector. Following his great love for flying, he pursued his dream and became a commercial pilot, working for American Eagle, retiring in 2007 as a Captain.
After retirement he enjoyed playing golf and spending time with family and friends.
Ed was predeceased by his brother George F. Varriale; sister, Mary McMahon; and brother-in- law, William McMahon. He is survived by his loving sister, Lauretta Carroll and her husband Paul Dunham of Melrose; cousin, Anne Distin (Ralph) of Melrose; and nieces and nephews, Ronald Carroll (Raya), Kathleen Carroll (Eric Wilson), James Carroll (Marcy Holmes), Elizabeth D'Allaird (T.J. Farnan) and Conor McMahon (Julie Rivera). Ed is also survived great-nieces and a nephew, Sylvia Carroll, Thomas D'Allaird and Emma McMahon and many friends and cousins.
A memorial Mass will be held Friday, January 13 at 11 a.m. at Our Lady of Victory Church where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated. Relatives and friends are invited to attend and may call at the church Friday morning from 10 a.m. until 11 a.m. Interment will follow at 1:30 p.m. at The Gerald BH Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery, Duel Road, Schuylerville.
The family would like to thank all the Hospice nurses and staff who were so caring and took such wonderful care of Ed in his last days.
