John Samuel McCulloch, Sr.

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of John Samuel McCulloch Sr. on December 10, 2025. He passed peacefully at home with his family by his side. He is survived by his loving wife of 40 years, Barbara. He is the proud father of John (April) McCulloch, Tina (Mike) LaBelle, Mark McCulloch, Charles McCulloch, Phillip McCulloch, Lisa McCulloch and Adam (Tiffanie) Beattie. John is also survived by his siblings Shirley and Howard, and was predeceased by Linda and David. He was especially close with his oldest grandson, Zach and his wife, Leslie who were always by his side. He leaves behind many grandchildren, Katie, Julie, Clarice, Jasmine, Olivia, Alexis, Hannah, Mark Jr., Johnathan, Mckenzie, April, Lakota, Briana and many nieces and nephews.

John spent most of his career driving 18-wheelers, earning the nickname “Johnny Mac” and forming many lifelong friendships along the way. In his younger years, you could find him shooting pool or rollerskating at Guptills. John was especially fond of Elvis and always tried to pass off Elvis’s license as his own at any opportunity.

John enjoyed hunting and fishing. He always had a good fishing story to tell. He passed on his love of fishing to his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren, they always knew Papa would put another worm on for them. He loved working on cars and had every car manual money could buy. The grandkids all knew Papa could fix anything.

In retirement, John spent his time watching Heartland and beating Barb in a game or two of rummy or chess. He loved spending time with his greats and grands, Roman, Owen, Colin, Skylar, Adalynn, Paisley and Levi. John enjoyed bird watching and could often be found sitting by the window waiting for his birds. Papa, we promise to keep the feeders full for you.

John will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.

In John's memory of his favorite look we are asking anyone who would like to participate in wearing a flannel to the service. We think John would love to see us all honoring his iconic look.

There will be a gathering of John's family and friends on Monday December 15, 2025 from 4-7PM at The Wm. Leahy Funeral home 336 Third St. Troy.
