John Nelligan, 77, of Castleton, entered into eternal life on Friday May 16, 2025, in the comfort of his home and in the presence of his loving family.
Born in Troy he was the son of the late Timothy and Anne Fox Nelligan, and the beloved husband to Sheryl Phillips Nelligan.
Growing up in Troy, John along with his siblings worked in the family business “Nelligan's Bakery”,
deciding to continue his education, he graduated from Sienna College, then enlisted into the U.S. Army where he was accepted into the Defense Language Institute and later stationed in Germany. Upon returning home he had several career paths until finding his place with Freihofer Bakery where he dedicated over 30 years service.
John coached Soccer for the East Greenbush travel team, and was a communicant of Holy Spirit Catholic Church in East Greenbush, where he also devoted his time in teaching Sunday school.
He enjoyed building and collecting model airplanes, but most of all he loved spending time with his family and friends.
In addition to his wife Sheryl he is survived by his daughters, Kate Nelligan and Bridget Baptiste, his beloved granddaughter Shea Baptiste and brother Roger (Barbara) Nelligan. He was predeceased by his siblings; Timothy Nelligan, James Nelligan and Margaret Conway. He is also survived by his sister in law Ellen Nelligan and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Friday at 9:30 am in Holy Spirit Catholic Church, 667 Columbia Turnpike, East Greenbush, Interment will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery Troy. Family and friends are invited and may call on Thursday from 4 – 7 pm at the Wm. Leahy Funeral Home, Troy.
