Joseph Ryan Obituary

Joseph P. “Brud” Ryan, 97, of Troy, NY, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by
his family on March 11, 2026. Brud was born February 16, 1929, on Ida Street, where
he would spend most of his life. He was the son of the late Patrick and Mary (O’Brien)
Ryan. A proud veteran, Brud served in the United States Navy, carrying the values of
discipline and service throughout his life. Following his military service, Brud was a
machinist at the Watervliet Arsenal, where he worked until 1985. In retirement, Brud
remained remarkably active and devoted to his routines. He could often be found
pedaling his bike to and from a long swim across Snyder’s Lake or basking in the sun
with fresh water from the Spring Avenue Spring. Brud enjoyed the simple rhythms of
life, whether he was enjoying a Reese's peanut butter cup and a good book, or an
afternoon on the boat. For many years, Brud shared his life with his beloved wife, Grace
Moran. Although they married later in life, Brud had long been a cornerstone of their
family, and a caring stepfather to his three children: Margaret, Molly, and Tommy. Of all
the titles Brud held throughout his life, the one he wore most proudly was “Papa,” as the
proud grandfather to Reilly, Jacquelyn, and Leighton Holbritter, and Makiah and Tyler
Moran. Beyond his immediate household, Brud held a deep and lasting bond with his
many nieces and nephews “The Ryans,” a  constant source of support, stories, and
family pride.
Brud was predeceased by his wife Grace Moran Ryan, son, Thomas Moran, and
siblings, John (Marion) Ryan, Frank (Jane) Ryan, Tom (Patricia) Ryan, and Agnes
Ryan. He is survived by his children, Molly (Eric) Holbritter and Margaret Moran, and his
grandchildren Reilly (Andrew) Schug, Jacquelyn (Bradley) Holbritter, Leighton Holbritter,
Makiah Moran, and Tyler Moran. He also leaves behind a large and loving legacy of
nieces, nephews, and friends.
The memorial service for Brud will be held on Wednesday March 18, 2026, at The
Bocketti Funeral home at 336 Third Street Troy. Relatives and friends are respectfully
invited to attend and may call at the funeral home Wednesday from 4 PM until 6 PM.
