Marjorie J. Powers, professor emeritus of nursing at the University of Illinois, Chicago, died on December 16, 2023. She was 92 years of age and lived in Albany at Teresian House Nursing Home where she received compassionate care for over twelve years.
Professor Powers taught at several universities, including Case Western Reserve, University of Rochester, University of Illinois, Chicago, and Boston College. From 1953 to 1965, she was a member of the Sisters of Mercy of Albany, serving on the staff of St. Peter's Hospital.
A native of Troy, she graduated from Catholic Central High, received a diploma in nursing from St. Peter's School of Nursing, a BS and MS from St. Louis University, and a PhD from Case Western Reserve University.
She was the daughter of the late James J. Powers and Agnes O'Neill Powers. She was the sister of the late Ruth Powers Kelly, Marion Powers Dinan, and James J. Powers Jr. She was pre-deceased by her sister-in-law Elizabeth Tierney Powers, her nephew Thomas Powers and niece Marjorie Kelly. She is survived by several nieces and nephews, including Sue Kelly, Joseph Kelly, Jay Powers, Michael Powers and Jill Powers.
Marjorie Powers dedicated herself as a professor of nursing to mentor and support her students enabling them to advance their careers in service to society and greatly improving the delivery of health care.
There will be no public visiting hours and in lieu of customary remembrances, the family requests that donations in her memory be made to a favorite charity of one’s choice. Arrangements are being made by Leahy-Bocketti Funeral Home, Troy, N.Y. Graveside services will be provided for her burial and a future mass will be dedicated in her memory .
