Stanley “Stasiu” Smulsky, 86 passed away at St. Peter’s Hospital on July
13, 2025. Born on May 3, 1939, he was a proud graduate of LaSalle Institute,
class of 1958, where he excelled in athletics, especially baseball and
basketball.
He married the love of his life, Mary Frances Mesley on April 15, 1961. Together
they raised two children, Maria (Jay) and Peggy and found deep joy in their
family. His heart swelled with pride when his grandson, Thomas of
Providence RI, graduated from LaSalle, his beloved Alma Mater.
He was the fourth child of Walter A. and Frances (Pszeniczny) Smulsky and is
survived by siblings Frances Lee, Edward Smulsky, Teresa Facteau, John
Smulsky, Matt Smulsky and was predeceased by Mary Murawski and
Walter Smulsky. He also leaves behind numerous nieces and nephews who
were dear to him.
He dedicated over four decades of service to Saint-Gobain in Watervliet. An avid
sports fan and certified official in baseball, soccer and volleyball, he
brought his knowledge and passion to the games he loved for over 40
years. A lifelong follower of the New York Mets, he would have cherished
the idea of a Subway Series this year.
He was proud of his Polish heritage and loved nothing more than his wife’s
cooking, the annual Smulsky Polish Christmas party, and the Clarinet
Polka.
Stasiu’s journey home was a long one, but he fought his illness with unusual
determination. Throughout his journey he was supported by numerous
family members, most especially his wife, and medical providers who tried
to ease his burden. Special thanks to his children, son-in law Jay, nieces
Karen and Jody Lange, Troy Fire Department paramedics, hospital staff of
St. Peter’s and Samaritan Hospital as well as Dr. Rehman, Albany
Associates in Cardiology and the Terrace at Eddy Memorial.
A funeral Mass will be held on Thursday at St. Joseph’s Church 416 Third Street
in Troy. Friends and family are invited to attend and may call at the church
beginning at 9:30AM with the funeral to follow at 10:30AM. Interment at St.
