Virginia Meyer Obituary

Virginia Spain Meyer, of Salem, NY and formerly of Troy passed away peacefully on December 1, 2023 surrounded by her loving family.

Born in Troy she was the daughter of the late Charles L. and Evelyn Russell Spain.

Educated in Troy she was a graduate from St. Peter's Academy and Catholic Central High School, she began a 25 year career in graphic and decorative arts as an illustrator for NYS Health Department office of Public Health Education. Virginia also worked in commercial advertising, layout and design including Store Advertising Manager for J.C. Penny and Art Director for Wm. H. Frear and Denby's Department stores in Troy, NY. She was honored by the Tri-City Advertising Association as an Outstanding Woman in Advertising in the Capital District.

After training at New York University School of Interior Design and for the next 10 years she was an Interior Decorator for John P. Ryan Furniture Company in Troy, NY. In addition Virginia was a Graphic Artist for Rensselaer County Planning Department, Illustrator for Rensselaer County Junior Museum and Senior Illustrator at NYS Health Dept. Office of Public Affairs.

In 1985 she married former Troy Mayor Lawrence D. Meyer and they moved to Salem, Washington County where Virginia pursued a second career in herbal history and local preservation projects. As a member of the Herb Society of America, Virginia many times presented her program “Herbs in Colonial America” at numerous locations and various workshops in New York and Vermont.

Her affiliations include; Fort Salem Theater Auxiliary, Historic Salem Court House Community Center, Washington County Historical Society, Washington County Advisory Council for Historic Preservation, Trustee of Knickerbocker Historical and Hebron Preservation Societies. Virginia was a Docent at the Shushan Covered Bridge Association, a member of Whipple City Quilters Guild and Herb Society of America. As a Mayflower Descendent she enjoyed the genealogical research required in that project.

Virginia was predeceased by her parents, husband and beloved sisters Peg Spain Murtagh and Jane Spain Ducatt.

She is survived by her loving siblings; Marion Spain Hannan, Cynthia McDanold, Charles Spain and James W. (Susan) Spain. She is also survived by a large extended family including nieces, nephews and loving first cousins.
