William A. Dunne

William A. Dunne, 98, of Troy, NY died peacefully in his sleep on October 18,
2023. Bill was the son of James, Jr. and Mary Dunne.
Bill graduated from La Salle Institute, where he received a varsity letter in both
football and ice hockey. A notable equestrian, he won many prizes for his riding
skills in competitions around the area.
After graduating he attended Yale University until he enlisted in the Navy, serving
aboard the USS Neville in the Pacific during WWII. At a church social for
servicemen in New York City, he met his future wife, Alice. He knew immediately
that she was the one for him and they wed in 1951.
Upon returning from war in 1946, he resumed his education, but left school to
take over James Dunne Jr. & Co., Inc., the insurance agency and real estate
brokerage started by his father. Bill spent over a half-century in the insurance
business and was recognized as an expert in insuring colleges and new car
dealerships.
Bill was committed to higher education, serving on the board of The College of
Saint Rose for many years. In 1998, they bestowed upon him the seventh
Carondelet Medal, recognizing “exceptional contributions to education” – the first
time the medal was not given to a Sister of St. Joseph. Additionally, Bill was
involved with numerous civic and professional organizations during his life.
He was predeceased by his loving wife, Alice, parents, James Jr. and Mary, and
brother, James. He is survived by his son, Bill (Theresa Setzer), and daughter,
Jennifer (Jonathan Kolber), as well as by his nephew, Richard (Judy) Urban, and
grandnephew, Peter Urban.
The funeral service for Bill will be held on Friday morning, October 27, 2023, at
10:15 AM at the William Leahy Funeral Home, 336 Third Street, Troy, and at 11:00
AM at Our Lady of Victory Church, 55 N Lake Ave, Troy, where a mass of Christian
burial will be celebrated.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend and may call at the funeral home on
Thursday from 4-7 PM. Interment with military honors will be held at St. Joseph’s
Cemetery, Mann Ave, Troy.
